What Is a Fibroid Tumor?

Fibroid tumor, also known as leiomyoma or myoma, is a mass of compacted muscle and fibrous tissue that grows on the wall (or sometimes on the outside) of the uterus. It can be as small as a pea or as large as a grapefruit. Fibroid tumors occur in 50 to 80 percent of women.
1- What are the symptoms of a fibroid tumor:

2- Can it cause complications?
Fibroids usually develop prior to pregnancy, though many women don’t know they have one until they have an ultrasound or the fibroid is discovered during a pelvic exam. If you know prior to pregnancy that you have fibroids, ask your doctor whether their size or position could cause problems, and which symptoms to watch for.
Most women who have one or more of these noncancerous growths experience no pregnancy complications because of them. For the 10 to 30 percent of pregnant women with fibroids who do end up having complications, the most common is abdominal pain, which occasionally may be accompanied by light vaginal bleeding. The baby is rarely affected unless the bleeding is substantial.
Even if you do experience symptoms, they most likely won’t affect the baby. However, your risk of miscarriage and premature delivery does increase slightly if you have fibroids. They occasionally cause the baby to be in an abnormal position for delivery. They can also stall labor, or, if they’re located in or near the cervical opening, they may block the baby’s passage. All of these (rather rare) problems can increase the likelihood of cesarean delivery.

A pelvic exam — larger uterine fibroids cause your uterus to change shape. Also, an ultrasound can be used to tell if you have fibroids.
4- How common are uterine fibroids?
According to the US National Library of Medicine, as many as one in five women get fibroids during their childbearing years. Most women don’t even know they have them because they have no symptoms!
5- How did I get uterine fibroids?
There is no known cause of uterine fibroids, but genetics, hormones and chemicals in your body may affect your chances of getting them.
6- How will uterine fibroids affect my baby?
Luckily, they usually don’t interfere with pregnancy. It’s possible that uterine fibroids can change the shape of or block your fallopian tubes, which can affect future pregnancies. You might experience some pain in your lower abdomen. In some cases, uterine fibroids can increase the risk of miscarriage, preterm birth or breech birth. You could also have a greater chance of getting a c-section or heavy bleeding after labor.
7- What’s the best way to treat uterine fibroids?
More often than not, fibroids are nothing more than a pain in the belly, so don’t let them worry you too much unless your symptoms grow problematic.
8- What can I do to prevent uterine fibroids?
There’s no specific way to prevent fibroids.
9- What do other pregnant moms do when they have uterine fibroids?
