Arteriosclerosis (calcium deposits ) and atherosclerosis (cholesterol/fat deposits) are hardening of the arteries. Arteriosclerosis is derived from the Greek words athero (meaning gruel or paste) and sclerosis (meaning hardness). Both conditions have the same effect on circulation, causing high blood pressure, angina, heart attack, cerebral stroke, thrombosis, loss of memory and concentration.
Arteriosclerosis is a thickening and hardening of the arteries due to the build up of calcium deposits on the insides wall of the artery. Atherosclerosis is a similar condition due to the build up of fatty substances. Both connections have similar effect in circulation of the blood through out the body. This is a slow, complex disease in which substances (fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste product, calcium, and other ) build up in the inner lining of an artery. This build-up is called plaque.
The first step toward developing arteriosclerosis and atheroscleroris is damage to the lining of an artery, most often by the presence of free radicals. After an artery has been damaged, the injury site attracts monocytes and platelets, which stick to the area and stimulate plaque formation and the growth of fat and cholesterol deposits.
Major risk factor of developing this conditions include smoking, high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. High blood pressure can cause these conditions because the excess strain on the arteries causes them to be weak;calcium and fatty deposits tend to form in these weakened areas and the blood pressure becomes even higher. Arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis are called the “silent killers” because they often produce no symptoms until a severe heart attack or stroke occurs. Elevated cholesterol levels and recurring angina are sign of a possible problem.
The effect of atherosclerosis defer depending upon which arteries in the body narrow and become clogged with plaque. For example, plaque build-up in the vessels that supply the heart with oxygen-rich blood may cause chest pain and lead to a heart attack while plaque build-up in the arteries that supply blood to the brain may result to a stroke.
Heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, ischemia (starvation of the cells due to insufficient circulation) may be as a result of arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis.
Atherosclerosis shows no symptoms until a significant percentage (40%) of a vessel become obstructed plaque and a complication occurs.
Symptoms vary depending upon which arteries in the body narrow and become clogged with plaque.
Colonary Artery Disease (CAD):
CAD is caused by plaque build-up in the vessels that supply the heart with oxygen-rich blood. When the tissues of the heart begin to become deprived of oxygen (ischemia), chest pain (angina) occurs. If the artery becomes completely blocked, cells in the heart begin to die and a heart attack may occur. Symptoms of CAD are usually triggered by physical exercise,sexual activity, exposure to cold weather, anger or stress.
The common symptoms of CAD include:
Chest pain (generally a heavy, squeezing, or crushing sensation with possible burning or stabbing pains), abdominal, leg, back, jaw, or shoulder/arm pain, nausea and vomiting, unexplained fatigue and/or extreme fatigue after physical activity, weakness, perspiration, shortness of breath and depression and/or anxiety.
Cerebrovascular Disease:
This is a disease caused by plague build-up n the arteries that supply the brain with oxygen-rich blood. Cerebrovascular disease causes transient ischemic attack (a sudden loss of brain function with complete recovery within 24 hours) and stroke.
Symptoms may include: Weakness or paralysis on one side of the body, garbled speech and/or inability to comprehend speech, loss of vision in one eye, paralysis of facial muscle, muscle weakness, impaired senses, stupor, poor coordination, involuntary jerky movements on one side of the body, rapid, repetitious, involuntary eye movement and vertigo.
Peripheral Artery disease:
Peripheral artery disease is caused by plaque build-up in the arteries that supply the extremities of the body (such as the hands and feet) with oxygen-rich blood.
Symptoms may include: pain, aching, cramps, numbness or sense of fatigue in the muscles of the lower extremities, diminished pulses in the extremities, decreased muscle mass, “Bruits” (blowing sounds that the physician hears with a stethoscope that indicates turbulence in the blood flow), Hair loss, thickened nails, smooth, shining skin surface, skin that is cold to the touch and gangrene.
POSSIBLE LIFESTYLE CHANGES, HELP AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Fortunately, several lifestyle changes can help improve heart health
->Eat high fiber foods that are low in cholesterol. Fruit, vegetables, and grains should be your primary foods.
->Eat plenty foods rich in vitamin E dark green leafy vegetables, legumes, seeds, nuts, garlic, wheat germ, soybeans and whole grains. Use only pure cold-pressed olive oil or unrefined canola oil. Drink only steamed-distilled water.
-> Do not eat candies, chips, fried foods, gravies, high cholesterol foods, junk foods, pies, processed foods, red meat or saturated fats. Avoid egg yolk, ice cream, salts and all food containing white flour or sugar.
-> Do not use stimulant like coffee, coke, tobacco, and alcohol. Maintain a healthy weight.
-> Reduce stress.
-> Get regular moderate exercise.
->Periodically monitor your blood pressure.
-> Do not take shark cartilage
->consider taking anticoagulants like aspirin to make blood less prone to clotting.
