WHAT IS HYDROCELE
A hydrocele is a condition in which fluid builds up in the scrotum, the sac that holds the testicles. It can cause the scrotum to swell and can be uncomfortable or painful. Hydroceles can occur in males of any age and are usually painless. They can be caused by inflammation or injury to the scrotum or by problems with the lymphatic or circulatory systems. Hydroceles can also be present at birth.
CAUSES OF HYDROCELE
There are several possible causes of hydrocele:
- Inflammation or injury to the scrotum: This can cause fluid to accumulate in the scrotum.
- Problems with the lymphatic system: The lymphatic system helps to drain fluid from the body’s tissues. If there is a problem with the lymphatic system, fluid can accumulate in the scrotum.
- Problems with the circulatory system: If the blood vessels in the scrotum are not functioning properly, it can cause fluid to accumulate in the scrotum.
- Congenital hydrocele: Some babies are born with a hydrocele, which is a fluid-filled sac that surrounds the testicle.
- Other conditions: Hydroceles can also be caused by other conditions, such as infections, tumors, or hernias.
TYPES OF HYDROCELE
There are two main types of hydrocele:
- Communicating hydrocele: This type of hydrocele occurs when there is a connection between the abdomen and the scrotum. This allows fluid from the abdomen to flow into the scrotum. Communicating hydroceles can occur in males of any age.
- Non-communicating hydrocele: This type of hydrocele occurs when there is no connection between the abdomen and the scrotum. Non-communicating hydroceles are more common in newborns and are usually present at birth. They can also occur in older males, but this is less common.
In both types of hydrocele, the fluid that accumulates in the scrotum can cause the scrotum to swell and can be uncomfortable or painful. Treatment may be necessary to remove the excess fluid.
SYMPTOMS OF HYDROCELE
A hydrocele is a collection of fluid in the scrotum, the sac that contains the testicles. The main symptom of a hydrocele is swelling or an accumulation of fluid in the scrotum. The testicle on the side of the hydrocele may appear larger than normal. In some cases, the hydrocele may cause a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum or discomfort or pain.
If the hydrocele is small, it may not cause any symptoms and may not require treatment. However, if the hydrocele is large or if it is causing discomfort or pain, treatment may be necessary. It is important to speak with a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment.
