WHAT IS ORCHITIS
Orchitis is an inflammation of the testicles. It can be caused by a bacterial infection, such as mumps or gonorrhea, or by a viral infection, such as the flu. Symptoms of orchitis may include pain and swelling in the testicles, fever, and chills. Treatment may involve taking antibiotics or antiviral medications, and may also involve pain management and rest. If left untreated, orchitis can lead to serious complications, such as testicular atrophy or infertility.
CAUSES OF ORCHITIS
Orchitis is usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Some common causes of orchitis include:
- Mumps: Mumps is a viral infection that can cause inflammation of the salivary glands, as well as the testicles.
- Gonorrhea: Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can cause inflammation of the testicles, as well as other reproductive organs.
- Flu: The flu (influenza) is a viral infection that can cause orchitis, as well as other symptoms such as fever, cough, and body aches.
- Other bacterial infections: Other bacterial infections, such as those caused by Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus aureus, can also cause orchitis.
- Trauma: In rare cases, orchitis can be caused by trauma to the testicles.
TYPES OF ORCHITIS
There are two main types of orchitis: acute orchitis and chronic orchitis.
- Acute orchitis: This is a sudden and severe inflammation of the testicles. It is often caused by a bacterial or viral infection and may be accompanied by fever, chills, and other symptoms.
- Chronic orchitis: This is a long-term inflammation of the testicles that may occur as a result of recurrent infections or other underlying health conditions. Chronic orchitis may cause testicular atrophy (shrinking of the testicles) and may lead to fertility problems.
It is important to see a healthcare provider if you suspect you have orchitis, as treatment may be necessary to prevent complications such as testicular atrophy or infertility.
SYMPTOMS OF ORCHITIS
Symptoms of orchitis may include:
- Pain and swelling in the testicles: The testicles may feel tender to the touch and may be swollen.
- Fever: A fever may be present in cases of acute orchitis caused by a bacterial or viral infection.
- Chills: Chills may be present in cases of acute orchitis caused by a bacterial or viral infection.
- Painful urination: In cases of orchitis caused by a sexually transmitted infection (STI), such as gonorrhea, painful urination may be present.
- Other symptoms: Other symptoms may include fatigue, loss of appetite, and general malaise.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to see a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and treatment. Left untreated, orchitis can lead to serious complications such as testicular atrophy or infertility.
