ULCER

WHAT IS ULCER

An ulcer is a sore or lesion that forms in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). These sores can also develop in the esophagus. The most common types of ulcers occur in the stomach (gastric ulcer) or the first part of the small intestine (duodenal ulcer), but they can also occur in other parts of the body, such as the skin or the mouth. Doctors diagnose ulcers through a combination of symptoms, medical history, and tests such as endoscopy (a procedure to look inside the stomach and duodenum) or tests for H. pylori infection.

CAUSES OF ULCER

Ulcers can be caused by various factors including;

  • Helicobacter pylori infection: This bacterium is a common cause of stomach ulcers. It weakens the protective mucous coating of the stomach and duodenum, allowing acid to irritate the sensitive lining underneath.

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): Regular use of NSAIDs like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen can irritate the stomach lining and increase the risk of developing ulcers.

  • Smoking: Smoking can weaken the stomach’s protective lining and increase stomach acid production, contributing to the development of ulcers.

  • Alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption can irritate the stomach lining and increase stomach acid production, making it more susceptible to ulcer formation.

  • Stress: While stress alone does not cause ulcers, it can worsen existing ulcers by increasing stomach acid production and affecting the immune system.

SYMPTOMS OF ULCER

The most common symptoms of ulcer are;

  • Burning pain: Typically felt in the abdomen between the breastbone and the navel.
  • Nausea and vomiting: Especially if the ulcer is severe.
  • Bloating: Feeling uncomfortably full, even after eating small amounts of food.
  • Indigestion: Often described as a feeling of discomfort or burning in the upper abdomen.
  • Weight loss: In cases where eating aggravates symptoms or the ulcer causes decreased appetite.

COMPLICATIONS

  • Bleeding: Ulcers can cause bleeding, which can lead to symptoms like black or bloody stools or vomiting blood.
  • Perforation: In severe cases, ulcers can create a hole in the stomach or intestine wall, leading to a medical emergency.
  • Obstruction: Scar tissue from ulcers can block food from moving through the digestive tract.
