Kidney stones and Urinary calculi are hard masses that occur when calcium oxalate, phosphates or uric acid crystallize into stones. People with a history of kidney stone formation should talk with their doctor to learn what type of stones they have. Calcium stones are the most common type (75-85%) of stones. They are frequently seen in men and occur when calc  ium combines with oxalate, phosphates or carbonate. Uric acid stones are formed from uric acid and are found in people with gout. Cystine stones are very rare and found mostly in people with hereditary problem called cystinuria in which excess Cystine is excreted in the urine.

Struvite stones are mainly found in women with urinary tract infections. Kidney stones cause intermittent upper back pain (acute and sharp) that can radiate to the lower abdomen and growing, when they pass down ureter. This pain is always on one side of the body and it’s followed by chills, vomiting, fever, frequent urination, which can contain pus, or blood and impaired urination with poor flow rate or dribbling. Bad diets, which include refined carbohydrate, simple sugars and high oxalate food (spinach, coffee, chocolate, rhubarb) are main cause of kidney stones.

High sugar consumption stimulates insulin, which in turn increase calcium excretion in urine. High protein diet with low level of fruits and vegetables, coffee, soft drinks, and excess salt consumption increases calcium secretion in urine.

Other causes are excess amount of mineral salt in drinking water, excessive consumption of carbonated beverages, high intake of red meat, gout, kidney disease, high alcohol consumption and excessive intake of milk and alkali (antacids), not enough fluid intake, heavy metal toxicity (cadmium), stress, low magnesium level (magnesium keeps calcium in solution), cystinuria, hyperparathyroidism (poor calcium metabolism) and obesity.

Drink plenty of fluids (minimum 8 glasses per day). Water, lemonade, and most fruit juice can help dilute the substances in the urine that form kidney stones; avoid grape fruit juice and soft drinks.

Don’t too much animal protein. Diets high in animal protein are linked to increase calcium in urine.

Eat a healthy diet-avoid oxalate (organic acid in some foods that can help stones form). Limit your intake of spinach, rhubarb, excess salt, beet greens, nuts, chocolate, tea, bran, almonds, peanuts, and strawberries which appear to significantly increase urinary oxalate levels. Potassium and magnesium are linked with reduced risk of kidney stones, so eat plenty of fruits and vegetable.

Eat water melon as a natural diuretic.

Drink cranberry juice, which prevent bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall. It has antibiotic and diuretic properties and prevents urinary tract infection.

Avoid alcohol, reduce weight. Avoid milk and antacids.

Check for heavy metals especially cadmium, reduce your intake of sugar, refined fruit, animal product (meats and diary), caffeine, alcohol, soda and salt.

Eat more fibre, vegetables, whole grains, and vegetable proteins.

Include foods rich in magnesium and low in calcium, such as barley, bran, corn, rye, oat, soy, brown rice, avocado, banana, and potato.
