Jaundice is a yellowy tinge to the skin and the whites of the eyes. It is caused by a build-up of chemical bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is made when red blood cells are broken down. The body is usually able to get rid of it easily unless there is something wrong with your liver or biliary system (this releases bile to help with digestions). The excess bilirubin causes the skin, eyes and mucus membrane in the mouth to appear yellowish in color.
Newborns frequently develop jaundice when they are unable to eliminate excess bilirubin following birth.
Jaundice usually appears within 1 or 2 days after birth and lasts a week or two with no need for treatment and in adult, it is a sign of one or several blood or liver disorders, including cirrhosis of the liver, hepatitis, pancreatic cancer and malaria.
Jaundice can also be caused by an obstruction of the bile duct, inadequate blood flow to the liver or congenital bilirubin disorders.
